What is Menopause? Perimenopause?...

Oct 5, 2013 by

Just some basics . . . can’t have a MenopEase blog without them! A woman is considered in menopause when she has stopped menstruating/having periods . . . at least for a year.  Her ovaries are no longer releasing eggs and is marked by a significant reduction in the production of the hormones estrogen and progesterone.  Not that you really know or care about hormones, but their fluctuation impacts the way you feel. Menopause typically occurs around 50 or 51, but can vary.  [Woo hoo, I’m right on schedule!] In addition to no more periods (YEAH!), other common symptoms are hot flashes, night sweats, trouble sleeping, headaches, mood swings, heart palpitations, vaginal dryness (Yuck!)/lack of sex drive, etc.  Symptoms can vary. Probably the most common symptom that people hear about with menopause are hot flashes, but I’ll tell you that my biggest complaint so far is the aches and pains.  I never hardly had a pain in my life until just a few months ago and I started noticing stiffness . . . I feel like I need an oil can for my hips (makes me think of the Tin Man on Wizard of Oz 🙂 ). I’ve even changed my mattress out twice and have added a thick mattress pad because my hips hurt so bad.  The mattress pad helps, but I’m still so stiff . . . I feel like an old woman almost over night :-(.  I think it’s just menopause but I have decided to finally go to the doctor to...
